“The only thing you can control is your own effort.”
― Theodora van den Beld
There is this part of the George Washington Parkway
where tall trees on either side of the road frame and point to the Washington Monument
like a red carpet before a grand entry door
You feel as though you are in for something transcendent just to be headed down that road.
On your right, the trees give way to the Potomac
now a beautiful and wise gray blue
guiding the road along, except far straighter and much more smooth
and here the road begins a dance with the river's bending edge
swaying and moving with one another's curves
man versus nature - forcing each other to arch and bow
and here the road begins a dance with the river's bending edge
swaying and moving with one another's curves
man versus nature - forcing each other to arch and bow
And soon on the left a dead tree emerges from the water's mist
remnants of a beautiful past and a solemn nod to the ever changing present.
Its on this road that I feel both empowered and absolutely out of control.

I love that view. One thing that I especially love is that is seems almost like a metaphor for life. From too far away you can't see the clear picture and as you get so closer, almost close enough you think you can make it without help you then loose sight of it altogether. But there is a sweet spot right in the middle that you know you are right no target, that you are going to get there if you just keep going. It reminds me to keep going, don't stop just because you can't see exactly what you could before. It is still there. Remember what you are working for and keep going.
