frozen ground.

"Hold fast to dreams
for if dreams die
life is a broken-winged bird
that can not fly

Hold fast to dreams
for when dreams go
life is a barren field
frozen with snow"
— Langston Hughes
There is a silent stillness after ice shields the ground
louder at night than in the morning.
I laid awake listening to it.
A cleansing of hope and a prolonged view.
This morning I felt the ground crack beneath my feet,
a crescendo of silence.
-------
There was a two hour delay this morning
and I have never been so thankful for those two extra hours of sleep.
